Keep Outfits Simple and Comfortable
When it comes to school portraits, less is more. Solid colors or subtle patterns work beautifully against the clean, neutral backdrops I use (black, white, gray, or cream). Avoid clothing with large logos or neon colors, which can be distracting. Be sure to check out the welcome site I created for your school to see which backdrop color will be used. This will help you avoid outfit mishaps, like sending your child in a black shirt when I'm using the black background. I promise we’re not going for the floating head look!
Most importantly, make sure your child feels comfortable. If they are tugging at a stiff collar or itchy sweater, it will show in the photos. Outfits that allow them to move, play, and feel like themselves always photograph best.

Kids thrive when they know what’s coming next. A quick, lighthearted chat the night before can make all the difference. Something as simple as, “Tomorrow a photographer is going to take your picture at school. You just get to be yourself and smile when you feel ready,” helps take away the pressure of “say cheese” and gives your child permission to relax.
