What is the Best Age for Photographing Babies and Kids?
If you’re a parent, you already know this truth: kids grow and change fast. One day you’re cradling a sleepy newborn, and the next they’re running circles around you in the backyard. It’s only natural to wonder, “When is the best age to book professional photos?”
The honest answer? There’s no single "perfect age"—just the perfect stage for what you want to remember. As an Indianapolis family and newborn photographer, I love helping families figure out the right time for their session. Whether I’m bringing my studio setup straight to your home (hello, convenience!) or meeting you on location, every stage has something special to capture.
Newborn Sweetness
The newborn stage—typically within the first two weeks—is all about the little details: teeny fingers, flaky toes, and that brand-new squishiness. If you’d like to capture those fleeting early days, the ideal time for a newborn session is within the first 10 days after birth. That said, this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule. I keep scheduling flexible so we can find the timing that feels right for your family. The best time to book is while you’re still pregnant, and once your baby arrives, we’ll set the exact session date. This way you won’t have to worry about timing or availability after delivery.
My in-home newborn sessions are baby-led, relaxed, and centered on keeping everyone comfortable. No need to pack a diaper bag or rush out the door—I bring everything to you, whether you’re envisioning a cozy lifestyle session or a more refined studio-inspired look.
Six months of smiles
Around six months, babies are full of expression and starting to sit on their own. This is such a fun stage because their personalities shine through, and they’re usually pretty easy to coax into giggles. Think chunky rolls, big grins, and curious eyes taking in the world. At this age, they are no longer the tiny newborn they were (not too long ago), but not yet the independent and spunky toddler.
If you’re in Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, or Westfield, this is an amazing age to schedule a milestone session either at home or outdoors in one of our gorgeous local parks.
First Birthday fun
The one-year mark is a favorite for many families. Babies are on the move—whether crawling, standing, or even walking—and everything feels like an adventure. These sessions are full of playful energy and are perfect for families who want images that show off their little one’s emerging independence and joy.
Many families in Indianapolis and the surrounding suburbs choose a first birthday session to document this milestone, sometimes with a cake smash, sometimes just with candid play. Either way, it’s always a celebration!
Toddler Magic
Toddlers keep us all on our toes (literally). This stage is about capturing their curiosity, big emotions, and the silly, fleeting expressions that make this age so unique. While it can feel like chaos in the moment, the photos are always worth it—playful, real, and filled with personality.
A lot of parents worry their toddler’s energy might be “too much” for professional photos, but honestly, that energy is part of the magic. I lean into it with silly jokes, quick games, and yes, the occasional well-placed bribe. All of those tricks help me capture genuine smiles and a full gallery of images you’ll love.
Whether I setup for an in-home studio session in your living room or I'm chasing your toddler through the yard, I make sure the process feels relaxed for you and fun for the kids.
Big kids, Big personalities
Don’t overlook the “big kid” years—preschool and beyond. This stage is pure magic because their personalities are in full bloom. They’ll tell you their best jokes, proudly show off a missing tooth, or demonstrate the newest skill they’ve mastered.
Even once your kids start (or finish) school, they don’t stop being your babies. Sessions with big kids are lively, full of laughter, and a beautiful mix of posed portraits and candid moments. These are the years when personalities shine brightest, and they deserve to be celebrated too. I love photographing big kids both in-home and outdoors at their favorite park—where they can truly be themselves.
So... what's the best age?
Here’s the thing: every stage of childhood is worth documenting. It’s less about finding the “best” time and more about recognizing what season you’re in and deciding what matters most to you right now. Do you want to remember the sleepy newborn days, the belly-laughing baby, the adventurous toddler, or the big kid with the huge personality? The good news is—there’s no wrong choice.
And if the thought of professional photos feels intimidating, that’s exactly where I come in. I’ll handle everything, from planning and preparation (I see you, detail-loving mommas) to wrangling the kids with patience and play. This is what I love to do, and it’s an honor to serve families in this way. Don’t let hesitation hold you back—these days are worth remembering.
